BLUM is an artwork created by Marius Black in 2021, on a photo he took in 2020, of a busy street of Blumentritt in Manila, Philippines, where he has lived for 35 years. At the time he made BLUM, it was during the pandemic and people weren’t allowed to go out due to the lockdowns. When he was able to do so, he saw that the usual very busy street was quiet and empty.

He realized how much he missed the hustle and bustle of everyone passing through or selling there, even if it was noisy and chaotic. He felt a deep sense of longing for the life he once knew, so he decided to paint the piece wishing it would bring back what once was, and thankfully, it did. Blooming back to its former state, the street scene he captured became the label of most jeepneys that pass by its lanes. This was exhibited at The BenCab Museum in Baguio for Marius’ 4th Manila Ukiyo-E Exhibit in 2024, where it was met by old and new fans of his beloved artworks, art enthusiasts, collectors, and fellow Filipinos or not, who admire or purchase BLUM in art prints, originals, and comic books.

Manila Ukiyo-E is an art series created by Marius Black in 2017, inspired by the Japanese Ukiyo-E woodblock prints of the Floating World. Manila Ukiyo-E portrays the daily urban life of Filipinos in Manila, capturing moments of joy, hardship, and resilience, depicting the hardships and loss of his fellow citizens who live in Manila during the pandemic, but also highlighting their right to exist and still enjoy life in the Philippines, not giving up their right to exist and still enjoy life in the Philippines.

Marius Black is a Filipino artist, mixed media painter, indie comic book creator, writer, and poet, who also loves cats. He is the creator of “Stray Cats & Friends” comics with his wife, Gudata. They both write, draw, and self-publish their own individual comic books, art books, poetry, and short novels, and sell them all online and at art and comic book conventions.
